Desert Essence Toothpaste

Grade: C

Overview:

Desert Essence

My biggest gripe about this toothpaste is that it contains Tea Tree Oil. Yes, there are definitely some benefits by applying Tea Tree Oil to help with skin conditions such as acne, chicken pox, athlete’s foot, but you should absolutely not swallow it!  Poison.org cited that a child swallowed a small amount by mistake and went into a coma. Yikes! They went on to say that “Tea tree oil should NOT be taken by mouth for any reason.” 1

That really makes me question why it’s in this toothpaste. However, the EWG has the overall hazard of this toothpaste as low, with limited concerns about the oils in it so there is some controversy.  My opinion is that there are plenty other natural toothpastes out there that have better ingredients in them so why not go with one of those?

What I like:

  • No Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Fluoride Free
  • Good minty taste
  • Excellent option for those with problems with your gums
  • 100% Vegan
  • Gluten Free
  • No Animal Testing

What I don’t like:

  • Tree Tea Oil
  • Contains Sodium Coco Sulfate
  • Foams up a lot
